training in Austin

I made a trip to Austin, so as to get some hill in my legs and do some riding with Thomas the
"Freight Train" Hallock. I arrived on Monday afternoon and we took a nice 3 1/2 hour ride out east. On tuesday is when the fun began I had 6 hours planned with 1 hour of hill repeats in the begining of the ride, then continue on for the rest of the 6 hours riding all the other hills we could find. Finishing off the ride by stopping by Jamba Juice and filling our bottles with delicious fruity energy. After getting back showering and getting our designated recovery foods. We enjoyed a nice homemade dinner. Compliments of Mrs. Hallock. The next day (wednesday) I had another 6 hrs with some TT efforts in the begining. This went well and Thomas and I did the last one in a two man rotation. Getting some team work practice. Later in the ride Thomas took me on an AWSOME dirt road with small climbs and a few cattle guards. Too finishs off the day Mr. Hallock made enchiladas from scratch. This was exactly what the body needed.

Fayetteville Stage Race

Fayetteville was a good weekend for the team. We all arrived on friday afternoon and settled into the B&B, and then went for a ride on the new course for Saturdays race. At least on thei roads we could figure out. That evening we went over the plan for the weekend and played scrabble, this is someting we are not so good at. The next morning I awoke around 7:30 giving me about three hours before the race start. Once everyone was awake and dressed wtih a belly full of food, we all headed down to to the Mad Duck RV. I was very happy to have the RV. Thre race finaly got underway about 10-15 minutes late, and the officials wanted to shorten the race. Which I am not for. Usually the longer the race the more it is to my advantage. So we did the scheduled 75 miles. the course was rolling with one bigger climb for th "hot spot". The race stayed together for the most part, with a few breaks getting off but not lasting, I did my part to go with a couple breaks that had guys in them that would usually stay away. The guys helped me to stay out of the wind and keep me up toward the front of the group. So as to be able to stay out of trouble. In the last 5 miles or so a small group jumped and I went to go with them and got pushed into the gutter, thus slowing my progress and missing the small jump. I got onto the front of the group and tried to bridge up, but the whole peleton came with me and I never quite got across. Causing a 10-15 second gap between those guys and the main peleton. I was not very worried because I knew my strength was coming that everning and had a chance to make up some time..

The TT on Saturday evening. Once I crossed the line after the road race I had 2.5 hrs until I had to start the TT. Which meant I had one hour to eat, shower, rest my legs and get dressed before I needed to be back down to the Mad Duck RV to start warming up. Everything went smootly and I was at the line for the TT on time and feeling good. The course was rolling and windy. I just told myself "Matt you will not go any slower than 25mph no matter what size the hill." With in my head I posted the 5th fastest time with most of the other top five guys on a second apart. So now I would be starting Sundays race in 6th for GC (General Classification).

Sunday I woke up, but not really becaue I believe I only was able to get about 4-5 hrs of sleep for some reason I just was not able to sleep. So I drank half a can of Monster then began to get dressed and food in my belly. We all rolled about and headed for the MAD DUCK RV. The race for today was 97 miles. Nathan and Troy went off the front very near the begining of the race and stayed away to pick up the time bonus, so no one around me in GC could get an advantage over me. While Pablo stayed near me to help with what I needed. When Nate and Troy were done with there job they came back to the peleton and helped keep me out of the wind and not let anything get down the road. So the race stayed together and came down to a pack sprint, leaving me finishing with the pack and loosing no time. With a 6th place finish in GC.

The weekend was productive and I would not have been able to place as hight in GC without the help of the Team. I thank them, along with Gary and Gary from MAD DUCK ADVENTURES for making the long drive out to Fayetteville to be our mechanical support. I would Also like to than Compliance Depot, Monster, Sock Guy, Jamba Juice, because without this support we would not be able to race as team.AMLI Downtown Crit. in Austin, April 9th will be our next stop.
